Johnson, in studio
Port Harcourt, Nigeria"As a young student artist, probably in my first or second year in the university, my greatest wish was to have a beautiul sturdy studio, somewhere in the thick of a forest, perhaps on a 50 or 100-acre land. All alone. Battling with art; its elusive nature, like the fleeting loving entrapment of a damsel, whom you'd think you've won her heart until she dances away like a butterfly." - Johnson Uwadinma

RE(de)FINED: Johnson Uwadinma
Past viewing_room
Urevbu Contemporary is pleased to present RE(de)FINED, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Nigerian artist Johnson Uwadinma. Uwadinma reflects on the fraught, but integral relationship between humans and nature that is informed by his experiences in the Niger Delta, such as oil spills, pollution, and the consequences of climate change, The tensions between abundance, life, fecundity, and degradation, waste, and environmental disasters are the thematic concerns of RE(de)FINED The human form is central to Uwadinma’s practice, as he considers humanity’s stewardship of natural resources, for better and for worse.
